The freeway was at a dead stop. Traffic had not moved for ten minutes, and there was no way to tell how long the tie-up would last. In the car next to mine, a man was talking excitedly on his cell phone. Suddenly he leaned across the front seat, rolled down the passenger window, thrust the phone at me and shouted, "Here--will you please tell my wife why I’m late!"
