Lomo refers to a little camera originally produced by the Soviet Union. Ho Yzung Yu,
like both the simplicity of the camera, and the group’s philosophy that photography
should be fun.
 
According to Arnold Castel, the head of Lomography in Asia, the appeal of the Lomo
is in part a reaction against the growing complexity of other cameras.
 
The Lomographic society tries to put the fun back in photography and recruit new
converts by organizing events and parties. At this exhibit pictures are displayed
that celebrate defects like the fact that light sometimes leaks into the cheap
camera casing.
 
This reflects their philosophy. Defy convention. Break the rules. But the
Lomographic Society is also a very conventional big business. Their calculated
marketing strategy makes young people feel like artists, rebels and members of an
exclusive club, all for the price of a camera.
