U.S. Music Retailers

When Tower Records was founded 44 years ago, it soon became the “in place” for
music. Now the once very successful music store chain is facing bankruptcy, feeling
the effects of a changing market, including the growing competition from
independent retail outlets, such as Amoeba.

Some record companies have been cutting the prices they charge retail stores.
Tony Green is a manager with Amoeba Records.

“One of them has been very progressive. The others have not, as yet. I think this is
the direction that they should take in the near future, if they are going to bring the
customers back into the stores.”

Progressive or not, retail outlets now must compete with music fans, who know
how to download their music from the Internet.

“Do you download music? Yeah, all the time. More than you can buy CDs? Yeah.
Why? If you want one song, and you don’t want to buy a CD - and CDs cost
money.”
