The Trees and the Ax
A woodcutter once came into a forest.
He asked the trees to give him a handle for his ax.
It seemed so modest a request.
So the principal trees agreed to it.
After they discussed for a moment, they decided that the plain homely ash should be furnished.
No sooner had the woodcutter fitted the staff to his purpose, than he began to cut down all trees around him.
He's felling the noblest trees in the wood.
The oak now seeing the whole matter too late, whispered to the cedar, "Our mistake has lost all of us,
if we had not sacrificed our humble neighbor, we might have yet stood for ages ourselves."
나무들과 도끼
한 번은 나무꾼이 숲에 왔어요.
그는 나무들에게 자기 도끼에 맞는 자루를 달라고 부탁했어요.
이것은 아주 정중한 요청처럼 보였어요.
그래서 몇몇 중요한 나무들이 거기에 동의했어요.
그들은 잠시 논의한 후에, 초라하고 보잘 것 없는 물푸레나무를 제공하기로 결정했어요.
그런데 나무꾼이 물푸레나무 토막을 그 목적에 어울리게 수공을 다 마치자마자, 그는 주변의 모든 나무들을 베기 시작했어요. 그는 숲에서 가장 훌륭한 나무들을 잘라 쓰러뜨리는 것이었어요.
모든 것이 때가 늦었다고 깨달은 떡갈나무가 (히말라야)삼나무에게 속삭였어요.
"우리의 실수로 우린 모든 것을 잃고 말았다. 만약 우리들의 보잘 것 없는 이웃을 희생시키지 않았다면, 우리들 자신도 아직 많은 세월을 살 수 있었을 텐데."
