A skeptic called on a priest to challenge him on a point the doubter considered an inconsistency in the Bible．
"It puzzles me," he said,"when God tested Job, he took everything from him but left him his wife.Why?"
"The answer is simple,"said the priest．"After God finished testing Job, he returned twice what he had taken away. If Job’s wife had also been removed, God would have had to give him two wives．And such a penalty not even God dared to inflict on him."
성경에 앞뒤가 맞지 않는 대목이 있다고 생각한 사람이 그 점을 따지기 위해 신부를 찾아갔다．"이건 알다가도 모를 입니다．하나님은 욥을 시험했을 때 그가 가진 것들을 죄다 앗아가면서도 유독 아내만은 그대로 남겨뒀습니다．어째서죠?" "해답은 간단합니다"라고 신부는 대답했다．"하나님께서는 욥을 시험하시고나서 그로부터 앗아간 것들을 죄다 곱으로 돌려주셨어요．만약 아내도 앗아갔더라면 아내도 둘이나 돌려줘야 했을 게 아닙니까．그러니 하나님께서도 차마 그런 벌은 내릴 수 없었던 겁니다."
