Project scientists have likened Spirit to a robotic geologist.
 
The rover's mission is to study rocks and soil in an effort to determine whether the
cold desolate planet once harbored life.
 
Over the next few days the six-wheeled vehicle will analyze the area near the
lander.
 
Eventually it will make its way toward a crater 100 meters away. 
 
After exploring that, the rover will literally head for the hills, making its way toward
a series of mountains to the east of the landing zone.
 
The Spirit's mission to explore the red planet along with its sister rover,
Opportunity, which will land next week comes as President Bush anounces an
ambitious new plan to eventually fly men and women to Mars.
