Microsoft is the second company to offer a reward in connection with the "My-
Doom" virus. Earlier, the software company The S.C.O. Group also offered a
$250,000 incentive.
A Russian computer security firm says it has traced the first infected e-mails back to
Russia. A spokesman for Kaspersky Labs says the virus most likely originated there,
but cautions someone from another country could have registered an e-mail
address with a Russian Internet provider.
Microsoft says the virus, which will spread by e-mail, includes a time bomb that will
launch an attack on web sites of either S.C.O. on Sunday or Microsoft on Tuesday.
Lou Gellos works for Microsoft.
"The motivation behind it, or the result behind it, I should say, is catastrophic."
The company says the virus is also likely to block access to the Internet sites of
companies that offer anti-virus protection.
Edward Black from the Computer and Communications Industry Association says
the reason the My-Doom virus has caused so many problems is because security
has not been a top priority for Microsoft.
